Lucent Designs was created as  a collaboration of two glass businesses, owned by two veterans of the glass industry.  Bill  Nanou, an accredited technician, operated a glass fabrication shop, and specialized in the in-house fabrication of glass, and  its installation.  His fields of  focus were frameless showers and aluminum assembly for glazing systems. Rob Bryantsmith, a certified journeyman of glass construction, concentrated on the design and installation of commercial interiors, as an accomplished artisan of carvings and other forms of decorative glass.  Both men had an appreciation and enthusiasm with glass as an artform. The two joined forces to devote more time to exploring  and expanding the field of art glass, and pursue their passion for the aesthetic carving and etching of glass.
 Glass carving challenges both the technical and creative capacities of the carver. Pressurizing a pot of abrasive and blasting it towards the surface of glass to degrade the surface,  and at a higher pressure carve into it, seems like a primitive etching technique.  The craft is far from crude, however.  The fine detail of the carving achievable and the subtle variations of shading that are possible, make it a craft that has amazing capabilities for creating stunning, lifelike reproductions.
